Frequently Asked Questions
Can my child play in Brookline Youth Baseball?
Your child can play with BYB if ONE of the following criteria are met:
- The parent or legal guardian is a resident of Brookline
- The child attends a school in Brookline
- The parent or legal guardian is an employee of the Town of Brookline
When do you play?
BYB offers league play in the:
- SPRING - our most popular season with recreational and competitive options depending on age
- SUMMER - known for high-level, competitive play, we also offer pick up games
- FALL - a great way to get in some more ball before we hang up our cleats
- WINTER - local skills-based programs offered by John Bucci
What are the time commitments in a typical week?
Each program has different commitments, depending on the season and age-level.
- T-Ball practices are typically once a week, usually Sundays at Lawrence Fields
- A-League participants practice once during the week (usually a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) and have a practice or game/scrimmage on Sundays, usually at Lawrence Fields
- In AA-League, AAA-League, and Majors, there are typically three to four events per week with a mix of practices and games in addition to post-season play. Games are played on weekdays and on Sundays at fields in Brookline, including Amory, Pierce, Baker, Larz, Waldstein, Robinson, and Eliot.
- Majors teams play the majority of their games at Eliot, Cypress, and Pine Manor Field.
- Challenger League meets weekly.
What equipment do you provide?
In most Leagues, we provide a playing shirt and hat. We also provide practice equipment and there is at least one catcher's set per team. We expect players and their families to provide the following:
- Bat
- Glove
- Baseball pants (with belt)
- Socks
- Cleats
In many cases, we will have used bats available for teams to share.
What is the cost and what does it cover?
Costs vary by age and by league and are commensurate with other town programs in our region. We are a non-profit organization and have no paid employees - the fees are set to cover team and league costs. There is an early-bird discount if you register at least a month before registration closes. Additionally, costs cover insurance, town field reservations, maintenance, t-shirts and hats, practice equipment, and umpire fees.
We do provide need-based waivers for those families who cannot cover the costs. Please reach out to our registration team if you would like to request a waiver.
What if my player is new to baseball?
BYB offers a number of introductory programs for younger players. For older players who are new to the game, we also provide a number of options in the Spring and Fall seasons to get your child more exposure to the game in a fun and supportive environment.
Go to the Home Page and click "Program Information" for more information across each season. If you have more questions, please reach out to our registration team and we will reach out to discuss your options.
How do I determine my child's "LEAGUE AGE"?
As a proud affiliate of Little League, BYB uses the Little League Age Chart to determine league eligibility. The league age is the age that your player is on August 31 of that year. Check out the EXTERNAL LINKS on the web site to check the age chart at Little League.
Should by player play above his or her League Age?
BYB, in conjunction with Little League, offers some opportunities - at BYB's determination - for experienced players in AA and AAA to "play up" in the next league. This is determined by coach evaluations at Mandatory Tryouts for players usually 10-12 years-old.
Should my 8 year-old play Single A or Double A Ball?
Our goal is that every player enjoy their initial experiences with baseball and BYB
Single A - players with little to no skills often benefit from more focused attention on fundamentals in our Single A League.
- Single A League focuses primarily on teaching fundamental baseball skills
- We use slower pitching machines, play games, but we don't keep score
- It is the right place for a kid who is just learning the game or who needs to build up confidence
Double A - players who have some skills -- like those mentioned below -- and self-confidence benefit from the AA practices coupled with games vs other teams where scores are kept.
- We keep score and have playoffs
- Pitching machines are used, albeit a bit faster than in A League - as the season evolves, we introduce kid pitch
- It is the right place for a kid who has developed some basic skills - catching a slowly tossed ball, throwing a ball straight, experience swinging a baseball bat - and, shows enough confidence putting these skills to work in a more competitive situation
Do you hold tryouts? What does that determine?
As our players get older and we hold regular seasons and playoffs, we seek to bring a level of parity across teams. To better assist us and make this a more objective process, we hold mandatory tryouts in the Spring for players 10-12 years-old.
No player is excluded from playing Spring or Fall Ball. This is simply to aid in creating more parity across leagues
9 year-olds are not required to participate unless they want to try out for a limited number of positions available for 9s in Triple-A. Triple A positions are mostly reserved for 10s and 11s, but BYB may allow a limited number of experienced 9s to join the Triple A League.
How are your coaches selected and are they vetted?
All BYB coaches are volunteers from our community. BYB provides training to parents and friends who are interested in becoming a BYB coach. All coaches are subject to background checks as required by law.
Are there equipment guidelines, restrictions?
BYB follows the guidelines set forth by Little League regarding bats and helmets. Please click below for more information.
